What is a CVT Transmission?

What is CVT? If you’re looking for new vehicles near Omaha, you may have encountered CVT transmissions in vehicle descriptions or on OEM sites. What is a CVT transmission exactly? It’s a certain kind of automatic transmission found in compact vehicles, and we have plenty of information below about what they are and how they work.

What is CVT and Should You Choose a CVT Transmission?

“CVT” is an acronym that stands for continuously variable transmission. They’re also referred to as a shiftless transmission, a step-less transmission, or a pulley transmission. If you’re browsing vehicles that have a CVT transmission, it’s good to keep in mind that they’re a kind of automatic transmission that swaps fixed-gear ratios for infinitely variable ratios, two pulleys, and an interceding chain or belt. CVTs are also found in fuel-efficient and compact vehicles and less so in performance cars. If you’re looking for a compact option that’s more fuel-efficient, a Honda vehicle with a CVT can be a great option for your needs!

How Does a CVT Work?

Traditional transmissions power vehicles using a series of different gears. CVTs differ because they don’t have high and low gears to shift between. CVTs use cone-shaped pulleys that are connected by an intervening belt or chain instead of gear systems.

The fixed side remains still, while the other side moves based on your speed using a hydraulic cylinder. That cylinder alters the distance between the pulley’s two sides, causing the belt to move higher or lower depending on your speed. Shifting using a shift knob or shift paddles isn’t necessary for this.

Does a CVT Have Any Benefits?

CVTs are fuel-efficient thanks to not needing to switch between gears, allowing the engine to operate within the best possible power range without using more fuel than what’s necessary. CVTs are also simpler in design and have fewer parts, meaning fewer chances of wear and tear on your transmission over time.
